S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index: The seasonally adjusted Case-Shiller 20-city composite house price index has been flat for four straight months. For August, we project another flat month. This translates into a 3.5% year-on-year decline, less severe than July's 4.1% drop because big declines a year ago are dropping out of the calculation.
Conference Board Consumer Confidence (Oct.): The Conference Board's consumer confidence index should decrease to 44.0 in October, from 45.4 in September. Equity market turmoil, European debt fears, poor job prospects, higher food prices, and falling household net worth are taking their toll on consumer confidence.
Nevertheless, retail sales and consumer spending are still chugging along despite the fact that consumer confidence is at recession levels.
